Sustainably produced wool

Pasture Raised and Rotationally Grazed

In addition to our delicious pasture raised meats we produce a variety of wool products here at the farm. We have a fiber flock of coated Natural Colored Longwool sheep and a flock of Border Cheviots. Sarah grew up in the fiber industry around shearing days, fiber festivals, and fleece shows. She is very passionate about producing high quality fleeces for hand spinners and fiber artists. New Roots sells skirted individual fleeces and yarn from our flock. We also sell beautiful tanned hides in a rainbow of colors. You can grab a fleece at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival, shop wool and yarn in the farm store, join our Yarn Club subscription, or come see and touch our wool products in the farm store during store hours.

Our wool

The flock at New Roots Farm is a beautiful assortment of natural colored longwool sheep with fleeces that live in that great place between medium and longwool and spin beautifully. Our breeds are crosses of mostly Romney, Romeldale, Corriedale with some Rambouillet and Border Leicester. The sheep are raised on pasture, rotationally grazed, humanely handled and most of the flock is coated. We breed for luster, a fine hand, uniform fleeces and of course gorgeous colors. All the fleeces we sell are well skirted to be free of short cuts, seconds, sweat locks, manure tags, etc.

Yarn

Our yarn is processed locally in small batches at family owned mills. We carry bulky, dk and worsted yarns in both natural and dyed colors. We work with local women-owned indie dye business to make special editions of our yarns. Our yarns are made from a variety of breeds including: Cheviot, Romney, Corriedale, and Border Leister. Some of the New Roots Farm yarns also include alpaca wool from the farm or merino for added softness.

Yarn Club

Yarn Club is a monthly subscription of sustainably produced premium yarns from our flocks. Each month you will receive one or two special skeins from the Maryland Lamb Coop member farms, a newsletter just for yarn club members, and extra accessories to help you complete your projects.  Our 100% wool yarns are made from our intensively and rotationally grazed sheep. When you’re wearing things you’ve made from our yarns you’re wearing sequestered carbon AND supporting small farms.
